Mechanical and biological treatment plant, tuas, singapore

NEA is planning a pilot MBT plant in Tuas. MBT (Mechanical and Biological Treatment) usually means a 2-stage process, where waste first undergo mechanical sorting to recover recyclables like metal and plastics, and then the residual organic waste undergoes biological treatment like composting or anaerobic digestion.

The MBT Plant typically receives Municipal Waste and separates it into 52% Fuel, 30% water, 3% metal and 15% inert materials. Trucks transport the Municipal Waste directly to the plants. Airlocks at the gates prevents foul odours from escaping from the stocks. The waste is dumped into the deep silos. Its capacity of about 7000m3 is equivalent to 300 truck loads equivalent to 100,000 households per month. The MBT plant can handle around 7% of domestic waste.
